Transportation UX Design

overview

This is a one week UX design project aiming to solve transportation problem. My "client" is Yunzhu Li, who has been moved to New York City for just several weeks. Her transportation problem is about taking airplanes between LaGuardia Airport, NY to Los Angeles International Airport, LA. In this project, I interviewed Yunzhu about her difficulties before designing. I made two different plans for her and did several user tests on both prototypes.

Design Process

user persona

Yunzhu Li has been moved to New York City for half a year to study at NYU. Before moving to New York, she lived in Los Angeles, along with her boyfriend and all of her friends. She takes a flight to L.A. every several weeks from LaGuardia Airport, NY to Los Angeles International Airport, LA. She currently lives in 10 City Point, Brooklyn. In the interview, she talked about problems she had every time when going to Los Angeles.

user needs

solution proposal

  1. Navigate machine: This device will be set in the pillars of the airport, visitors can easily scan their flight tickets to get their flight information like departing time, terminal and gate number. A simple map indicating the route from current position and the terminal would be shown on the screen with some direction orders like “go straight down to the lobby”, “turn left and go upstairs” in order to make it clearer for the visitors.
  2. Nav-line: direction lines on the wall in different colors saying “Follow this line to Gate 1-10” “Follow this line to Terminal A” for people to get to their destination easier.

User Testing

After testing the first prototype, I got some feedback from my client:

  1. There are too much information on the screen so it's hard to understand at the first glance. Would be better if it has an instructor page shows how to use this device.
  2. Add speaker for people with low vision.
