Pre-Thesis Week01 - Card Sorting

2018.9.10

Step 1 – Inspiration cards

Based on what I feel like being inspired most, I came up with 15 different topics of inspiration cards. It includes Damaged art pieces,Post-rock music styleChaos art installationsDystopia movies/fictionsParadox movies, Emotion changes, Pressure, Turning point,Montage, Forest, Building a relationship, Taste of food and lifestyle, Font style, Golden retriever, Gradient.

15 inspiration cards based on what I’m interested in.

Step 2 – Personal interest cards and level

For each of the inspiration cards, I asked myself three levels of ‘why’ in order to find my real interests hiding behind those cards.
*Check all interest cards here: Card sorting

For each inspiration card, I asked myself three levels of ‘why’ in order to find my real interests behind those categories.

Step 3 – Questions

Post 3 levels of ‘why’, it’s time to ask a question in order to spread the topic a little bit. For this step, I started with some simple questions since I have no idea if I’m in the right direction…and some of them turned out to be totally different from the original card.

I selected five cards that I feel like it can come up with some interesting stuff and here are my five interest groups and initial questions:

1. Triangle – paradox movie
Why sometimes people feel like they have been to the exact same moment?

2. Emotional changes
How do we know we are happy?

3. The turning point in movies
Can we feel freedom by brainwashing/mental control?

4. Building a relationship
What caused addicted?

5. Golden retriever
Why can some animals be trained while others cannot?

 Step 4 – Book reading

Please check the book review post.

 Step 5 – Initial Research

I did some research towards these questions and it only came up with more and more questions…Here are my findings and notes on them: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18iZBCUX-6avrvq6ClLy8-FN98mWdtmiyhn464O59m7k/edit?usp=sharing

Step 6 – Formulating more questions

Based on my initial research, I dug deeper and the following are more questions related to my original topic:

1. Triangle – paradox movie
Can we control deja vu?
Why some dreams feel so real?
How to tell virtual from reality?
Can people make up memory?
How to escape from a time loop, if there is a time loop?

2. Emotional changes
How do we measure/track emotions?
How to substitute an emotion through different sensor?
Can we create emotions by code?
How can we control emotions?
Why we have a physical feeling when having an emotional change?

3. The turning point in movies
How to do mind control?
How to get rid of the stereotype?
What caused a rebel?
Why people always hope there is a turning point?
How to stop brainwashing?

4. Building a relationship
What effect a relationship?
How to find out if a person is in love with someone or not?
Why people have relationship anxiety?
Why do some people like to socialize while some are not?
How to make a withdrawal symptom not that miserable?

5. Golden retriever
Do dogs have the same emotions as us?
Why do couple look alike?
How to find the soulmate pet?
Why people’s pet always have the same characteristic with them?
Why are we attracted to people who resemble our parents or ourselves?

Possible Ideas

I found out that most of my questions go into neuro and emotion… So at this moment, I have some possible ideas:
– I want to do more research about substitute an emotion through different sensors, like to feel happy through taste, to feel angry through touch…
– Another idea is about building a relationship between strangers through non-physical involvement, just by effect their neuron activities…
