Special Topic Presentation

2018.4.12

For the special topic, I did some research about help people with blindness to get involved with VR(Virtual Reality) and AR(Augment Reality) games. But I found that for people who have seeing issues, there are not so many great ways to make sensory substitutions for people with blindness. So from this point, I thought about how can we do some improvements on existing video games and make them accessible.

I found a physical device called "Eyecane", which use vibration to help people with blind navigate through a virtual or real maze. This device can translate distance information into sounds and vibrations. With this device, maze games can be accessible to people with low vision.

For video games, developers are also trying to make them accessible for people with blindness. There is a website named GMA, aiming to make audio games for people with low vision. From  2003, they have updated at least 1,000 games and have built a player room to allow players to play online with other players in real time.
